The BAVFD provides the Emergency Service District #5 (ESD #5) with Firefighters who not only respond to fires, but also vehicle wrecks, hazardous conditions, water rescues, and first responders for medical emergencies. Additionally, the department provides public assistance and numerous public education opportunities.
About the Chief
Chief, Charlie Ivy, started his professional firefighter career in August of 1984. He started in Hollywood Park, which is located in San Antonio, Texas. He was only there a short time before he was promoted to driver in 1985 and then to Lieutenant in 1987. In 1993, while still working at the Hollywood Park station, Chief Ivy was promoted to Assistant Chief in charge of operations and promoted one final time in 1998 to Chief. Chief Ivy continued to stay on in Hollywood Park for about 4 more years and then he made the move to the Bulverde station. He continued on here in Bulverde with the Chief status. Since Chief Ivy came to our community he has implemented many things in the department such as, daily truck checks, equipment checks, setup a hydrant map and started checking the hydrants twice a year as per ISO. (click here for another ISO website.) He has also purchased new equipment i.e, jaws of life, air bags, rescue stands and has developed department policies. He has even written new standard operating guidlines, since the old ones were out of date. The firefighter family has grown since Chief Ivy took the reigns. They now have an additional full-time firefighter and Chief Ivy is working on other ways for that family to continue to grow. Chief Ivy has put his heart and soul into making our fire department one of the best. He continues to work diligently to get new and better equipment and will continue to do so for you, the community and his firefighters. With all the time and effort Chief Ivy and the firefighters have put into growing our fire department they should be thanked.
